Why inkjet is better for business

For more than a decide we have opted for laser printers over inkjet for reasons of speed, price and quality. HP’s recent Guinness World Record changes things.

A new world record - and it's an inkjet!

In April 2012 the HP Officejet Pro X series printers (X551dw and X576dw) won the Guinness world record for the fastest time to print 500 sheets by an office colour desktop printer. It printed 500 sheets in just over 7 minutes which is close to 70 pagers per minute and more than 2 minutes faster than the nearest competitor. What’s amazing about this record is that the Officejet Pro X printer is not a laser printer – it’s an inkjet.

Ink is now faster

So why is HP’s new OfficeJet Pro X inkjet printer range faster than other laser printers? It's due to a new technology pioneered by HP called “page-wide inkjet”. 42,240 tiny nozzles spanning the width of a page simultaneously deliver four colours of ink onto a moving sheet of paper. The printhead no longer needs to move to print the width of the page.

Ink is now cheaper

This new technology is not only faster than laser, it’s cheaper too. Reputable testing shows the high-yield HP Officejet Pro X cartridges cost only 1.3 cents for mono and 6.1 cents for colour. Multiply that over a year and you’ll save a lot of money.

Print quality doesn't suffer

The good news is that the new OfficeJet Pro X proves inkjet can match laser print quality. Under 3rd party tests the text quality is better than equivalently-priced laser printers and only one step below the top tier, ultra-pricey colour laser multi-function printers. It’s easily good enough for most businesses. HP have also launched ColorLok plain paper which resists smearing when you get it wet.

Ink is "greener" than toner

With ink there is no carcinogenic toner dust to worry about plus energy use is reduced by up to 50 percent compared to colour laser printers because there is no need for a fuser. HP Officejet Pro X Series printers meet ENERGY STAR® guidelines and their power requirements are low with a Typical Energy Consumption (TEC) of only 0.6 kilowatt hours (kWh) per week.

So what do you compromise by investing in an Officejet Pro X for your office? The answer is: nothing. That’s why this new innovative technology scored Editors Choice in the recent PC world review and why no other sub $1,000 offer printer can compete for the world record.

On an inkjet printer can we use a preprinted letterhead as the paperstock....with the ink running?

Hi Ron,

You can use any stock paper you like but it may take a couple seconds to dry as it's not the HP special paper. Please let us know if you have any further questions or feel free to email us at

I have used inkjet printers before and the inks have clogged up due to infrequent use and hot dry conditions in an office without air-conditioning.

What is the failure rate of the newer printers?

We use our multi printer for 30% printing, and 70% scanning. How does it perform at scanning?

Also, can it print duplex?
