What is Google Glass?

Love it or hate it Google Glass is a revolutionary way of integrating the digital world into our everyday life. It is a camera, display, touchpad, battery and microphone built into spectacle frames that allows you to perch a display in your field of vision. This display can film, take pictures, search and translate on the go. You can use Google Glass with prescription glasses, sunglasses or no glasses  at all.

What can it do?

The practical uses of Google Glass are endless and you can look forward to an AppStore dedicated to Glass. Using Google Glass in its simplest form allows you to take photos and record film. You can also participate in a video conference, create emails via voice recognition, access Google Maps (for Satnav) and there is a futuristic app that lets you search for your friends in a crowd.

When does it arrive?

You can expect the first units to start shipping in the US around Christmas time but there is no exact schedule for when it will hit our shores. Let’s say early 2014.

How much does it cost?

There will be a number of different models available and we expect prices will start around AU$1,000 with the beefed-up model (the "Explorer") to be advertised for around $1,500.

Will there be alternatives?

Of course! You can expect Apple and Oakley to release their own models and other niche brands such as Vuzix and Baidu are also in development. There will be a lot of competition in this space.

What does the future hold?

Google Glass is to smart phones what smart phones are to PCs. Expect our lives to become increasingly digital.
