There's no doubt that Apple's iPad tablet is the must-have gadget of the moment. Its beautiful large display, mesmerising user interface and sheer usefulness for casually browsing the web, using mobile applications or even just reading an electronic book can't be denied.

And like all must-have gadgets, Apple's little bundle of joy seems like it's everywhere right now to those that don't have one. Your colleague pulls it out at meetings to pass around a document for review. The person sitting next to you on the bus has one. And if you're really unlucky, you have to walk to work past an Apple store, where you can see people inside blissfully enjoying the tablet every day.

In short, the temptation to buy an iPad right now is endless.

But it's also a very bad time to buy an iPad. That temptation is sheer illusion - if you buy one of Apple's little bundles of joy right now, in several months' time you'll regret it. Here's five reasons why.

1. The next iPad will be released very shortly

Last week, Apple revealed it would launch its new iPad 2 in Australia on March 25. That's right -- we're only a few weeks from having a completely new iPad in Australia. Do you really need to buy the old model -- or can you hold on for just a little longer?

The iPad 2 is thinner, comes with a more powerful processing unit and even a lighter weight. In short, if you buy an iPad now, in only a few weeks your iPad is likely to be very out of date.

2. New iPad 2 means cheaper iPad

Even if you don't care about the iPad 2's new features, you should still hold off buying one of the first iPads until the next generation is released. This is because after the iPad 2 starts selling, thousands of people will be looking to sell their first iPad as they upgrade, and retail outlets should be dumping stock cheaply.

When the iPad 2 is released, the cost of the first iPad will drop dramatically. It's worth waiting for the savings.

3. Great competitors are about to arrive

Companies like Motorola, HTC, Samsung, LG and more have all revealed great tablet devices similar to the iPad over the past month, and many of the tablets will hit Australia in the middle of 2010.

Some have fantastic features that the iPad doesn't have - such as the ability to view Adobe Flash files online. They also come in form factors that Apple doesn't, such as a 7" size that can be held in one hand. With so much choice about to arrive, it's a good idea to hold off buying an iPad and check out the competition first.

4. Smartphones are getting great

Most of the functions you'd use an iPad for - browsing the internet, using apps, reading documents and eBooks , watching multimedia content - can also be carried out on a smartphone.

And the smartphone market is exploding - with many of the same manufacturers we mentioned above and Apple itself bringing a huge range of amazing phones with ever-larger screen sizes to Australia. Everyone needs a mobile phone anyway - so do you really need an iPad as well?

5. OK, you win

If you got through this great list of reasons not to buy an iPad and are still determined to buy one, that's OK. There's nothing wrong with having a fever for Apple products - many people do - as long as you admit that you're addicted and seek treatment immediately, by addressing the symptoms with a shiny new iPad. Enjoy!

Think I would rather a Windows Phone or one of the Windows based compamtible iPads that run Windows. I want a usb port and a webcam built in and an OS that works. If I never see iTunes again it will be too soon.

It is almost confirmed that there will be a new model released on the 2nd of March, so wait until then.

People may say that Apple products are unreliable, but I think they are. My iPad is a wonderful device, and you'll love the new one!
